Minstrel Shows

Minstrel shows began in the early 19oo’s where white Americans began painting their faces black to resemble African Americans and traveled to put on shows. These performers also dressed themselves in clothes they thought what slaves and African Americans would wear. Minstrel music was also inspired by African music, but the shows mocked life as a slave. To me, this is like an admiration in a disturbing disguise because they practically plagiarized black culture which shows a liking in the art, but the presentation is questionable. White people are low key into black culture, but it seems like they’re too proud of their superiority that they won’t admit it. What makes the situation worse is that the disguise is hidden with racism and hatred towards African Americans. These slave owners don’t give African Americans a choice in how their lives are lived and then make fun of it which is just a terrible act to do. Blacks aren’t even allowed to participate in certain shows which doesn’t make sense considering the show is about them and based on their culture. I feel like we still see this concept of cultural appropriation in modern day arts like music or comedy shows or fashion where more dominant cultures take ideas from minority cultures and make it their own without appropriate recognition.
