Stephen Witt’s “How Music Got Free”, is an interesting choice of book to read because it discusses the forms of audio that leads to the development of MP3 music and the beginning of piracy. Witt also touches on people who copyright this types of audio input and the rate at which technology is changing in relation to MP3 specifically. One of the most interesting parts of the book was when Witt brought up the fact that music had changed from a relatively large disk that was played on a record player, to a small and thin CD, then an easier access through an MP3, and how some people were outraged by this change. This statement carried impact because of how musical technology will continue to change as society grows and develops, and every time there will always be people that think we are ruining society as a whole with new gadgets and inventions. Also, because of the increasing ability for easier access to music, piracy of music became more of a prevalent issue in the 1990’s, according to Witt. Stephen Witt brought the subject of MP3 audio and music into more of a perspective that is less complicated to understand and has more of a meaning behind it, rather than focusing on just the history of the subject.
